| The Daylily Hybridizer's Summit December 3-5, 2010 Chattanooga Choo-Choo Hotel Chattanooga, Tennessee |
Due to popular demand, we have decided that it is time for us to have another
gathering of hybridizers and daylily friends. There is little to do in the garden in
early December (unless you are in the deepest south), so let us gather at that time.
We will get together and have a brand new, fabulous, informative daylily feat, and
we will do it in Chattanooga in December. There will be plenty of wonderful (nearly
unstructured) – (non-tedious) – good old-fashioned daylily fun at a time when we
need it the most! We thought you might enjoy a look back at the Myrtle Beach
event - a bit about how it began and how it evolved:
It began years ago in New York City. It was at the Edison Hotel in Manhattan, where
Van Sellers would meet Mort Morss, Vic Santa Lucia and David Kirchhoff for a few
days. Pat & Grace Stamile, along with their beautiful, beloved daughter, Christine,
would come over from their home in Setauket, Long Island. On the Stamile’s day in
Manhattan, we all showed images of our newest and favorite new daylilies before
a dinner and fling on the town. Van & Vic shared a sunny corner suite at the Edison
with David & Mort and there was plenty of room to accommodate everyone's
needs. There was so much fun doing and sharing the daylily excitement that we
invited Dr. Virginia Peck to join us for Christmas and daylily fun in New York City.
The excitement was highly contagious! The next year, Bryant Millikan and Don
Kercheval were there. (Some folks still smoked like chimneys, and poor Virginia
swore she needed oxygen) – But we digress.
Van, ever the visionary, (along with Vic, every bit his equal) recognizing a good
thing when he saw it, suggested that we move the event to Myrtle Beach and invite
hybridizing friends to come join in the fun. We selected Thanksgiving weekend.
One of the basic premises was to keep it affordable, informal and fun!
The first few years Van, Vic, Mort and David would rent the penthouse suite and
show slides in their room. The number of hybridizers began to increase
exponentially. Jeff, Alex, Chris and Elizabeth Salter, Joe Marinello, Bob and Emily
Olsen, Dr. Bob Carr, Judith Weston, Dr. Darrell Apps, John and Marjorie Kinnebrew,
Ed, Collier and Janice Brown, John Hurd, along with Pat and Grace Stamile and of
course Dr. Virginia Peck were soon to arrive. Refreshments (furnished those first
five or more years by VVM&D) were available throughout the day and some folks
had to sit on the stairs to see the slides. One evening, Emily Olsen served turkey
and all the trimmings to everyone at the Landmark Hotel.
If not the first year at Myrtle Beach, but soon after, Steve Moldovan, Lee & Jean
Pickles, Charles Douglas, Becky Adams, Ted Petit, John Peat, Frieda Allen Jarrell,
John Benz, Ra Hansen, Jay and Peggy Turman, Jean Duncan and Henry Ruhling,
Mal and Gerda Brooker, Elaine and Luther Beck, and Don Albers were there. Linda
Again was there along with Kay Hewitt, Jeff and Peggy Jeffcoat, Bob & Mimi
Schwartz, Dan Trimmer and Bob Clary. As the excitement increased, so did the
size of the crowd and, number of slides. It became the destination for hybridizers,
old and young, new and experienced, to come and learn, enjoy, and relax. Folks
came and made their initial daylily shopping lists for the following year. The most
perfect venue to refine a wish list and reserve plants for the following spring.
This event was the first model for the AHS Symposia now held from California to
Pennsylvania and Canada. One could find, Cindy and Larry Grace soon after they
began their hybridizing programs. Kay Day, Don Herr, George and Kathy Lawrence,
Scotty Godwin, Bob Marshall, Bob Roycroft, Morre and Irene Otte, Linda Sue &
Curtis Barnes, Kate Carpenter, Jim Cooper, Woody James attended, usually many
times. In poor health, the brilliant hybridizer, Dr. John Lambert sent images of his
seedlings (hybridized from his wheel chair) for Dr. Peck to show and narrate.
Cathy Chenet attended several meetings. Richard Norris, Karol Emmerich, Ludlow
Lambertson and Gunda Abajian exploded onto the Myrtle Beach scene and wowed
folks with the advanced levels of their early work.
The first few years were at a high-rise condominium (Ramada managed it) with
great ocean views and nice restaurant (with views). When the crowd grew into a
hundred or more, we moved the event to the Landmark Hotel, where the meeting
room was large enough and with a nominal, if any fee. There were parties every
night, and everyone had a grand time. Many came as novices. John Benz was still
a baby. :~) There were thousands of images, countless shopping trips, games of
miniature golf, scrabble, bridge and more.
The event provided a great forum where folks came and built lifelong friendships.
So now it is about to happen, all over again. Who but Lee Pickles could step up and
pull it back together. Van Sellers himself has given it his blessing! This is your
opportunity to see hundreds of images of daylilies on the leading edge, before they
are seen anywhere else. Come visit with old and new hybridizers, and see old and
new friends.
From fine dining to fine art, great aquariums and shopping in a gorgeous setting,
Chattanooga is a great destination. We hope that you will soon make plans to be
